در گذشته بيمارى مشمشمه در اکثر* کشورهاى اروپائى شيوع داشت ولى با به*کارگيرى روش*هاى کنترل و مبارزه وقوع آن به*تدريج در طول قرون کاهش يافته است. بيمارى مشمشه هنوز در کشورهاى آسيائى و آفريقائى و آمريکاى جنوبى وجود دارد و در ايالت متحده آمريکا و اروپاى غربى از سال ۱۹۳۸ تاکنون عفونت اکتسابى به*طور طبيعى ديده نشده است.
بيمارى مشمشه از بيمارى*هاى واگيردار و خطرناک تک سمى*ها بوده از جمله بيمارى*هاى مشترک بين انسان و دام مى*باشد

اين بيمارى در درجه اول به*عنوان يکى از بيمارى*هاى اسب، الاغ و قاطر شناخته شده و تصور مى*شود ساير حيوانات چندان حساسيتى به آن ندارد ولى تحت شرايطى گوسفند و بز به آن مبتلا مى*شوند. سگ و گربه با خوردن لاشه آلوده تک سمى*ها بيمار مى*گردند. گاو و خوک به بيمارى مقاوم*تر هستند ولى پرندگان در مقابل بيمارى کاملاً مقاوم مى*باشند. از حيوانات زمانى*که در شرايط بهداشتى نامساعد، خستگى مفرط و کار سنگين و تغذيه بد قرار گيرند حساسيت بيشترى به بيمارى نشان مى*دهند.
همان*طور که در بالا گفته شد انسان به بيمارى مشمشه حساس است و ابتلاء به آن اغلب منجر به مرگ مى*شود افرادى*که در تماس نزديک با اسب*ها، قاطرها و الاغ*ها هستند و همچنين دامپزشکان و کارکنان آزمايشگاه*ها بيشتر در معرض خطر ابتلاء قرار دارند. بيمارى از طريق مخاطات بيني، دستگاه گوارش، زخم*ها و خراش*ها جلدى و هواى تنفسى آلوده به انسان سرايت مى*کند.
