شغال مصری که تاکنون گونه*ای نادر از شغال طلایی شمال آفریقا محسوب می*شد، اکنون هویت جدیدی یافته است. آزمایش دی.ان.ای این حیوان نشان می*دهد که او به جز رنگ بدن، تفاوت دیگری با گرگ خاکستری ندارد!


به گزارش سرویس علمی خبرگزاری دانشجویان ایران، ایسنا، شغال مصری تاکنون گونه*ای نادر از نژاد شغال طلایی محسوب می*شد؛ هرچند که توماس هاکسلی، زیست*شناس تکاملی در سال 1880 اظهار کرده بود که شغال مصری بسیار شبیه گرگ خاکستری است.


اما شواهد جدید حاکی از آن است که این گونه اصلا شغال نبوده و نوعی گرگ خاکستری است. هویت اصلی این حیوان زمانی شناسایی شد که دانشمندان واحد پژوهشی حفاظت از حیات*وحش دانشگاه آکسفورد، دی.ان.ای آن را با نمونه*هایی در یک بانک* اطلاعاتی ژنتیکی تطبیق دادند. این تحقیقات نشان داد که شغال طلایی بدون شک گرگ خاکستری است.


این کشف برای این شغال*ها پیامدهای حفاظتی مثبتی به همراه داشته است. شغال*های طلایی در معرض خطر محسوب نمی*شوند، اما این گونه که به تازگی کشف شده ممکن است در خطر انقراض باشد. شغال*های دیگری که از لحاظ ژنتیکی مشابه هستند نیز در 2495 کیلومتر دورتر از مصر و در اتیوپی شناسایی شدند.

به گفته دانشمندان، تنها گونه گرگ خاکستری ساکن قاره آفریقا گونه*ای مرموز است که سازمان حفاظت از محیط زیست باید ارزیابی سریعی درمورد آن انجام دهد. باورها بر این است که گرگ*ها حدود سه میلیون سال پیش و قبل از گسترش یافتن در نیمکره شمالی به آفریقا مهاجرت کرده*اند.
