ماهیچه لولایی دوکفه*ای باید در سرمای زیاد قابلیت کمتری برای ذخیره انرژی داشته*باشد. درنظر داشته باشیم که انفجار فاجعه*بار شاتل «چلنجر» در سال 1986 در هوای سرد صورت گرفت. سرمای شدید باعث شد که حلقه دایره*شکل، خردشده وخروج گاز مایع را ممکن کند

«حلزون*های دوکفه*ای» (scallop) که به اختصار «دوکفه*ای» نامیده می*شوند؛ از معدود بی*مهرگان دوکفه*ای هستند که واقعا می*توانند شنا کنند. وقتی که این نرم*تن احساس خطر می*کند، به سرعت پوسته*های صدفی خود را به*هم چسبانده و خود را به سمتی که ایمن است پرتاب می*کند. اگر چنانچه در این حالت به صدف حیوان ضربه*های متوالی زده شود حیوان در آب رها شده و با حرکات مواجی شنا می*کند. این شیوه حرکت که به ظاهر طبیعی است، می*تواند راهنمایی*های مفیدی برای محققانی فراهم کند که می*خواهند انواع پلیمرها را در درجه* حرارت*های متفاوت دستکاری کنند.

حلزون*های دوکفه*ای، دو کفه آهکی دارند که با یک لولا به*هم چسبیده*اند. در مرکز هر لولا یک ماهیچه بزرگ هست که موقع خطر منقبض*شده و می*تواند دو کفه را به*هم بچسباند و بخش*های نرم بدن حیوان را حفظ کند. تا وقتی ماهیچه بزرگ منقبض است، کفه*ها چسبیده*اند. باز شدن کفه*ها کار ماهیچه کوچک دیگری است که درون لولای ماهیچه*ای قراردارد. این ماهیچه کوچک در صورتی می*تواند کفه*ها را باز کند که ماهیچه بزرگ منبسط شده*باشد. برای همین، آنهایی*که برای خرید صدف تازه به بازار می*روند، صدف*های بسته را انتخاب می*کنند چراکه ماهیچه بزرگ هنوز منقبض بوده و نشان می*دهد که صدف زنده است.

مکانیسم پرتاب به جلو در اختاپوس*ها و ماهی*های مرکب تا حدودی شبیه به موتورهای دوزمانه است. زمانی*که عضله کشنده کفه*های صدف را می*بندد. آب موجود در درون محوطه داخلی بدن صدف با فشار، بیرون زده می*شود و وقتی لولای عضلانی اجازه بازشدن را به کفه*های صدف می*دهد بار دیگر آب به درون بدن موجود زنده وارد می*شود. این باز و بسته شدن*ها باعث حرکت صدف در آب می*شود و تا زمان احساس خطر، می*تواند ادامه داشته باشد. مشکل این شیوه حرکت این است که نمی*توان آن را زیاد ادامه داد ولی این حرکت*های جهش*وار می*تواند موجود زنده را از خطر دور نگه دارد.

این شیوه خاص حرکت، سازگاری*های تکاملی خاص خود را داشته*است، مثل سبک*شدن وزن کفه*های آهکی و بزرگ*شدن عضله*های منقبض*شونده. سازگاری مفید دیگر این موجودات، این است که عضله «لولایی» *از یک نوع بافت خاص الاستیک با عملکرد سریع تشکیل شده است. اما حرکت و جابه*جایی دوکفه*ای*ها تحت*تاثیر شرایط محیطی ممکن است بسیار ناکارآمد شود. مثلا جابه*جایی این موجودات در آب*های سرد بسیار سخت است؛ چون برون*ده انرژی حاصله از عضلات در آب*های سرد بسیار کمتر از آب*های با درجه حرارت معمولی است. این ناکارآمدی در آب*های سرد قطبی که ممکن است درجه حرارت آن به صفر نزدیک شود بسیار مشکل می*شود. تنها کاهش درجه حرارت و کم*شدن فعالیت عضلانی نیستند که حرکت آن*ها را مشکل می*سازند. در محیط*های سرد ویسکوزیته آب*ها نیز زیاد است و خود مشکل مضاعفی برای حرکت در آب است. اکنون با در نظر گرفتن این واقعیت*ها بهتر می*توان نحوه حرکت ژله*ماهی قطبی Adamussium colbecki را درک کرد. این ژله*ماهی در آب*های سرد و رقیق قطبی تنها می*تواند خود را به آرامی تا سطح آب بکشاند.

مارک دنی و لوک میلر - دو بیومکانیست ایستگاه تحقیقات دریایی هاپکینز وابسته به دانشگاه استنفورد- به قطب جنوب رفتند تا راز حرکت ژله*ماهی را درک کنند. کشفیات اولیه این دو زیست*شناس غافلگیرکننده نبود. آنها دریافتند که در ژله*ماهی قطبی در مقایسه با نمونه استوایی، نسبت پوسته آهکی به کل بدن کم*تر است. این باعث می*شود که موجودات کفه*دار قطبی، انرژی عضلانی کمتری نیاز داشته باشند. آنها همچنین دریافتند که در نرم*تنان قطبی عضلات بازکننده از حد *انتظار کوچک*تر هستند. کوچک*بودن عضلات بازکننده باعث کاهش وزن و در نتیجه آسان شدن حرکت می*شود ولی در عین حال نشان می*دهد که این کوچک*شدن عضله نیروی کافی را برای باز کردن سریع کفه*ها فراهم نمی*کند یا اینکه زمان لازم برای این کار را زیاد می*کند. ترکیب کوچک*شدن وزن و ماهیچه منقبض*کننده باعث*شده که دوکفه*ای*های قطبی، 20 درصد انواع استوایی برای حرکت و جابه*جایی انرژی تولید کنند. این دو دانشمند در جست*وجوی تبیین تکاملی این تفاوت*ها در اندازه ماهیچه و پوسته آهکی بوده*اند؛ ولی آنچه آنها به*دست آوردند ادراکی نوین از ویژگی*های پلیمرهاست.
