شبکیه چشم با استفاده از دو نوع سلول مخروطی (زرد-سبز-قرمز) و استوانه ای (سفید-سیاه) قادر به تشخیص رنگ ها است.

شبکیه چشم سگ و گربه نیز دارای هر دو نوع سلول مخروطی و استوانه ای است ولی نسبت این سلول ها با چشم انسان متفاوت می باشد و به همین دلیل می توان گفت سگ ها و گربه ها رنگ ها را می بینند ولی رنگ اجسام از دید آنها محو تر است.

به دلیل اینکه شبکیه چشم سگ ها و گربه ها سلولهای استوانه ای بیشتری نسبت به چشم انسان دارد این حیوانات قادرند طیف گسترده تری از رنگ های خاکستری را از هم تمایز دهند.

شبکیه چشم گربه ها دارای لایه ای آینه مانند است که با انعکاس نور در شب موجب تقویت نور اجسام شده و گربه را قادر می سازد که در شب نیز به خوبی ببیند. به همین دلیل گربه ها شب ها نیز می توانند شکار کنند.
