نس برنارد از dogue de tibet بدست امده است و در حقیقت میتوان تصور نمود که جد اصلی او سگ های molosses بوده اند که در حدود 2000 سال پیش همراه رومیان از کوه های الپ گذشته و به سرزمین سوئیس امروزی رسیده اند.

تمام اعضای بدن سن برنارد درشت و حجیم است ارتفاع این سگ در نر ها حداقل 70 و در ماده ها حداقل 65 سانتی متر و وزن بین 50 و 55 کیلوگرم میباشد جمجمه بزرگ و برامده بینی مستقیم و لب فوقانی قدری اویزان دندانها محکم چشم به

اندازه متوسط و تیره رنگ میباشد.

رنگ قرمز با لکه های سفید یا سفید با لکه های قرمز.در سگ های نر گاهی اوقات رنگ سیاه نیز دیده میشودو پوشش ان نیز با موهای دراز یا کوتاه میباشد.

سن برنارد مراهی با انسان را خیلی دوست دارد سگی است وطیع منطقی و ارام و متین.با سگ های کوچک جثه زیاد میانه ی خوبی ندارد این سگ اصولا سگی است کوهستانی و قدرت عجیبی در پیش بینی بهمن ها و ریزش برف در کوهستان

دارداین سگ به خیر خواهی وقار شکوه و هوش بسیار معروف است و به منظور جستجو و پیاده کردن مسافران مانده در برف و گرفتار شدن در بهمن در مناطق کوهستانی در فصل زمستان به خیر خواهی معروف است

در ایام ژانویه بسیاری از اهالی سوئیس و زائران مناطق نزدیک جهت انجام مراسم مذهبی کریسمس معتقد به رفتن به کلیسای مقدس سن برنارد هستند بنابر این لازم است از این مناطق ک.هستانی پر برف خطرناک و صعب العبور بگذرند و خود را

به ان دیار برسانند.

در ضمن این فصل به علت وجود بارش برف سنگین در ان مناطق همچنین به علت داشتن پرتگاه های خطرناک و وجود حیوانات وحشی و درنده جان بسیاری از مسافران در معرض خطر خواهد بود به همین مناسبت از سگهای سن برناردکه برای

انجام این وظیفه از کارایی و توانایی لازم برخوردارند استفاده کرده.

این نژاد به خوبی میتواند جان بسیاری از افراد را از گزند حیوانات وحشی و درنده در امان نگه دارد.

در ضمن با پیش بینی بهمن و نزول ان در این مسیر سعی میکنند جان افراد را در ان منطقه کوهستانی از رفتن به زیر برف و بهمن مصون نگه دارد و به عنوان یک سگ گارد و محافظ افراد را سالم به کلیسای سن برنارد برسانند
