یک گروه بین*المللی از محققان اخیرآ طی پژوهشی متوجه شده**اند که استخوان، نقش مهمی را در سوخت و ساز قند خون، انرژی و وزن ایفا می*کند و به احتمال زیاد عضوی از سیستم درون*ریز بدن است. این یافته می*تواند به راهی در درمان و پیشگیری از ابتلا به دیابت نوع دو منجر شود. بیشتر افراد تصور می*کنند که استخوان*ها ساختارهای کلسیمی سختی هستند که موجب استحکام و مانع فرو ریختن بدن در خود می*شوند.
دکتر جرارد کارسِنتی(Dr.Gerard Karsenty) از دانشگاه کلمبیا می*گوید: «این کشف که استخوان*های ما مسئول تنظیم متابولیسم قند خون هستند، در شرایطی که ما تا پیش از این به آن آگاهی نداشتیم، دانسته*های ما از وظایف استخوان را به طور کامل تغییر می*دهد و از دیدگاهی نو در زمینه سوخت و ساز انرژی پرده برمی*دارد»

پیش از این نیز محققان حدس می*زدند که استخوان *ها در سوخت و ساز دخیلند. زیرا لپتین(هورمون اشتها که از سلول*های چربی ترشح می*گردد) نیز در کنترل فرآیند تشکیل استخوان نقش دارد. بنابراین آن*ها شروع به جستجوی مولکول*هایی کردند که ممکن است نقش مشارکتی در شکل*گیری استخوان و سیستم درون*ریز داشته باشند.
پیش*تر در پژوهش بر روی موش آزمایشگاهی پروسه متابولیکی ناشناخته*ای کشف شده بود که در آن نقش استئوکلسین (Osteocalcin) هورمونی که در تشکیل و کنترل سخت شدن استخوان نقش دارد و از سلول*های استخوان*ساز ترشح می*شود، در تنظیم قند خون و ذخیره چربی مشخص شده بود.

تحقیقات نشان می*دهد که افزایش استئوکلسین به طور موثری از پیشرفت بیماری دیابت نوع دو و چاقی مفرط در موش آزمایشگاهی ممانعت به عمل می*آورد. با استفاده از این یافته می*توان با افزایش هورمون استئوکلسین در بیماران مبتلا به دیابت نوع دو، یک درمان مؤثر را (به خصوص در افرادی که بیماری آن*ها وابسته به غلظت هورمون است) آغاز نمود.

افزایش ترشح انسولین و افزایش حساسیت بدن به آن، کمک به تولید سلول*های بتای جزایر لانگرهانس در لوزالمعده (Pancreatic Beta Cells) که مولد اصلی هورمون انسولین هستند و کاهش ذخیره چربی با اثر متقابل بر سلول*های چربی از دیگر وظایف هورمون استئوکلسین هستند.
وقتی پژوهشگران موش*هایی را که فاقد هورمون استئوکلسین بودند، مورد مطالعه قرار دادند، مشاهده کردند که آن*ها مبتلا به دیابت نوع دو و دچار کاهش انسولین، افزایش ذخیره چربی، کاهش تولید پروتئین آدیپونکتین (Adiponectin) که فرآیند ذخیره*سازی چربی را کنترل می*کند، هستند و لوزالمعده آن*ها دارای تعداد کمتری از سلول*های بتا است.

همچنین محققان دریافته*اند که استخوان*ها با پیام*های خاصی پروسه درون*ریز در لوزالمعده و سلول*های چربی را نیز کنترل می*کنند.
