فلامینگو پرنده ای است باپاهای دراز ومنقاری منحنی وگردنی بلند خمیده، آبچر بابدنی بسیار کشیده وپر وبالی به رنگهای سفید وصورتی است. در برواز ها با ها وکردنش کشیده وقدری بائین تر از سطح بدن قرار می گیرد.

بالهایش ترکیب زیبائی از رنکهای سرخ زسیاه نشان می دهد. برنده نابالغ قهوه ای مایل به خاکستری جرک است. فلامینکو به آرامی راه می رود ودر حالیکه سر ومنقار خودرا در آب کم عمق فرو برده تغذیه می کند.

فلامینکو از ۹۰/۰ تا ۵/۱ متر بلندی دارد. بیشتر فلامینکو ها حلزون وکیاهان آبی را می خورند. این برندکان یصورت کله لی که به هزاران می رسد زندکی می کنند.

جفتگیری

سالی یکبار جفتگیری می کند. ولانه ای گلین برای تخمگذاری می سازد. بیشتر فلامینگو های ماده یک تخم در سوراخ لانه می گذارند ونر و ماده هردو به نوبت روی تخم می خوابند.

بس از سی روز جوجه از تخم بیرون می آید. جوجه فلامینگو بعد از ۵روز لانه را ترک می گوید وبه گروه فلامینگو های حوحه می بیوندد.

اما برای تغذیه به لانه ای که درآن تولد یافته و پدر ومادر برایش خوراک آماده کرده اند باز می گردد. بعد از دوهفته خود به جستجوی خوراک می پردازد. فلامینگو در محیط طبیعی از ۱۵ تا ۲۰ سال زندگی می کند.

بیشتر پرنده شناسان فلامینگو ها را به چهار گونه تقسیم کرده فلامینگو های بزرگ در آفریقا، جنوب آسیا و اروبا وجنوب آمریکای جنوبی وهند غربی زندکی می کنند.

فلامینگو های کوچک در دره کریت ریفت کنیا و تانگانیکا در آفریقا به سر می برند. فلامینگو های دیگر دو گونه هستند.

گونه کمیاب فلامینکو های آندی وجیمس می باشند که در کرانهٔ دریاجه های بلند کوههای آند در آمریکای جنوبی به سر می برند.

فلامینگو های وحشی روزگاری در فلوریدای جنوبی می زیستند، اما مردم آنها را به خاطر برهای زیبایشان کشتند.

زیستگاه

مردابهای ساحلی کم عمق. ماندابهای حاصل طغیان در یاجه ها، لجین زارها و غیره به سر می برند.

پراکندگی

در دریاچهٔ ارومیه و در تابستان در فارس به سر می برند وممکن است در خوزستان زاد و ولد کنند

تغذیه

رژیم غذایی فلامینگو سخت پوستی به نام آرتمیا می باشد و گفته میشود سرخی رنگ فلامینگوها به خاطر موادی است که در غذای آنها(آرتمیا)وجود دارد.

- کوچ فلامینگو ها

با آغاز فصل سرما فلامینگو ها به عرض های جغرافیایی جنوبی مهاجرت می کنند.

پناهگاه حیات وحش میانکاله، پارک ملی دریاچه ی ارومیه و تالاب بین المللی پریشان از جمله نقاط میزبان دسته های چند صدتایی از این پرندگان هستند.
