چرا پرندگان تخم می*گذارند؟

اغلب نوزادان پستانداران، برخی از خزندگان و حتی برخی از ماهی ها شناکنان از بدن مادر خارج می شوند
اما نوزاد پرندگان و لاک پشت ها با شکستن پوسته تخم به دنیا پا می گذارند.

جانوران تخم گذار (oviparous) تخم هایی تولید می کنند که پس از خارج شدن از بدن مادر سرباز می کند.

پستانداران و گروه های دیگری که در بالا ذکر شدند، طوری تحول یافته اند که جنین های شان تا زمان کامل شدن رشد و نمو آن درون مجرای تناسلی نگهدارند.

یکی از چالش های چنین روش نگهداری جنینی که به آن زنده زایی (vivaparity) می گویند این است که مادر باید سنگینی وزن جنین را تحمل کند.

دانشمندان می گویند که زنده زایی نمی توانست در پرندگان ایجاد شود، چون در این صورت مادر با وجود وزن جنین ها قادر به پرواز نمی بود.

یک مشکل دیگر روش زنده زایی رسیدن هوا به تخم لقاح یافته است.

نظر دانشمندان بر این است که پوسته تخم و مجاری تخمدانی پرندگان و لاک پشت ها امکان تبادل اکسیژن کافی را در درون بدن مادر نمی دهند.

محدودیت جریان هوا ممکن است مانع رشد درازمدت رویانی در درون بدن پرنده یا لاک پشت مادر شود.

بر اساس این نظریه رویان (جنین) پرندگان درون تخمی که در آشیانه گذاشته می شود، دسترسی بیشتری به هوا دارد تا درون بدن مادر
