ماهی گیرک پرنده ای است از خانواده ماهی گیرکیان (Alcidae) از راسته سلیم سانان (Charadriiformes).

ظاهر آن ها به خاطر رنگ سیاه و سفیدشان، قامت راستشان و برخی از رفتارهایشان به پنگوئن ها شبیه است ولی از خویشاوندان پنگوئن نیستند.

ماهی گیرک های امروزی بر خلاف پنگوئن ها توانایی پرواز دارند (به جز گونه ای به نام ماهی گیرک بزرگ که به تازگی منقرض شده است).

ماهی گیرک ها شناگران و شیرجه زنان ماهری هستند ولی راه رفتن آن ها ناآزموده به نظر می آید.

ماهی گیرک ها بال های کوتاهی دارند و به این خاطر مجبورند برای پرواز به سرعت بال بزنند. این پرندگان در دریاها زندگی می کنند و تنها برای زادآوری به کرانه های می آیند.
