توانایی کاهش مصرف اکسیژن در آهو

آهوان و سایر پستاندران بزرگ صحرائی در زمان کمبود آب خود را از لحاظ فیزیولوژیکی با محیط وفق داده و می توانند در شرایط سخت محیطی زنده بمانند.

بر اساس تحقیقی که اخیرا توسط انجمن جانورشناسی انجام گرفته آهوان در صحرای عربستان می توانند نیاز به اکسیژن را در برخی از اندام های بدن خود مانند قلب و جگر کاهش داده

و میزان تنفس این اندام ها را کم کنند. زیرا هر چه تعداد دفعات تنفس کمتر باشد از مقدار آبی که در هنگام تنفس بخار می شود نیز کاسته می شود.

به دلیل محدود بودن منابع آبی در صحرا ، آهوان باید آب مورد نیاز بدنشان را از طریق رژیم غذایی گیاهی خود تامین کنند.

بر اساس تحقیق انجمن ملی حیاط وحش عربستان ، آهوان کمترین میزان تبخیر آب را نسبت به سایر جانوران ساکن در مناطق خشک دارند.

اندازه و حجم قلب و جگر آهوان که نقش اصی در سوخت و ساز بدن را به عهده دارند در دوره چهار ماهه کمبود آب و غذا کاهش می یابد.

اما در مقابل حجم روده این حیوان که عهده دار عمل نشخوار و تامین کننده ۲۸ تا ۴۶ درصد ترکیبات پروتئینی لازم و تامین کننده انرژی مورد نیاز بدن آهوان است کاهش پیدا نمیکند.

صحرای عربستان یکی از خشک ترین مناطق دنیا به شمار می آید که مقدار ریزش باران در آن بسیار کم و غیر قابل پیش بینی و درجه حرارت آن نیز بسیار بالا است .

آهوان ساکن در این منطقه توانائی بالائی برای کم کردن تبخیر آب بدنشان دارند و به همین دلیل می توانند در این محیط ادامه حیات دهند.

محققین دریافته اند که این حیوانات مقادیری چربی در مغز خود ذخیره میکنند تا بدین وسیله ایمنی متابولیسم مغزشان را در زمان کمبود آب حفظ کنند.
