پرنده ای دیر مهاجر است، و نیمه های بهار به کشورمان می آید و در زمستان در آفریقا بسر می برد. اندازه اش تقریبا" ۲۶ سانتی متراست و با بالهای باز تقریبا" ۵۵ سانتی متر می شود ؛ صدای جالب توجه و مخصوص شبگرد معمولی ، شبها شنیده می شود .
بدنی کشیده به رنگ قهوه ای مایل به خاکستری دارد (مانند گلسنگ) که پر از راه راه عرضی و خال های قهوه ای پررنگ و نخودی است و موجب همرنگی کامل آن با محیط می شود. سرش پهن و تخت است ، با منقار خیلی کوچک و شکاف دهنی خیلی بزرگ ، بالها و دمش دراز است . پرنده نر سه لکه سفید نزدیک انتهای بال دارد و نوک شاهپرهای کناری دم آن سفید است . در طی روز بدون حرکت و به حالت قوز کرده ، روی شاخه ها و یا روی زمین بسر می برد ، شبها ضمن پرواز به تغذیه می پردازد ، بدین ترتیب که شاپرکها را با پروازی بی صدا ، سبک و نامنظم تعقیب شکار می کند (با دهان باز شکار نمی کند) . در فصل زاد و ولد مکررا صدای بلند به هم زدن بالهایش شنیده می شود.
