چرا کرم های خاکی در باران بیرون می آیند؟

شاید شما هم دیده اید هنگام باران های شدید که آب حفره های زیرزمینی کرم های خاکی را پر می کند
آنها از زیر زمین بیرون می آیند و روی پیاده روها یا آسفالت خیابان سرگردان می مانند. اما چرا اینگونه می شود؟ مسئله این نیست که این کرم ها نمی خواهند تر شوند! در واقع کرم های خاکی برای اینکه بتوانند تنفس کنند، به مرطوب بودن نیاز دارند.
کرم های خاکی ریه ندارند. آنها از طریق پوستشان تنفس می کنند.اکسیژن در پوشش مخاطی روی پوست کرم حل می شود، سپس از طریق پوست به درون رگ های خونی انتشار پیدا می کند.
پوست باید مرطوب باشد تا به اکسیژن امکان عبور بدهد. غده های خاصی در بدن کرم ترشحاتی مخاطی را تولید می کنند که پوست کرم را همیشه لزج نگه می دارد.
مسئله مهم حفظ تعادل است. خشکی بیش از حد بد است: اگر کرم ها خشک شوند، می میرند. اما رطوبت بیش از حد هم خوب نیست: کرم ها می توانند تا دو هفته درون آب زنده بمانند، اما در این حالت آنها نمی توانند اکسیژن کافی را از آب جذب کنند و در نهایت خفه می شوند.
اما چرا در باران های سیل آسا این همه کرم را در جاده ها و پیاده روها می بینیم؟
چون تا یک میلیون کرم خاکی ممکن است در زیر زمینی به وسعت تنها یک جریب زندگی کنند. مراقب قدم های خودتان باشید!
