خرس های قطبی یکدیگر را میخورند

خرس های قطبی را می توان یکی از مهمترین قربانیان فرآیند گرم شدن زمین برشمرد. این موضوع زمانی بیشتر قابل لمس می شود که دریابیم براساس آمار و اطلاعات موجود تاثیر تغییرات جوی بر نواحی قطبی و یخی زمین و به دنبال آن خرس های قطبی غیرقابل انکار بوده است.
قطب شمال به سرعت در حال گرم شدن است. حتی سریع تر از آنکه دانشمندان فکر می کنند و این سرنوشت تلخی برای خرس ها و حیوانات قطبی است.
منطقه قطب در پنجاه سال گذشته دو برابر سریع تر از بقیه نقاط دنیا گرم شده است و یخ های اقیانوس منجمد شمالی ۲۰ درصد کوچک تر شده است. افزایش دما از یک طرف شیوه زندگی بومیان قطب را به خطر انداخته و از طرف دیگر باعث شده است حیات بعضی از گونه ها همچون خرس قطبی به خطر بیفتد. خرس های قطبی جانوران سرگردانی هستند که می توانند ماه ها روی یک تکه یخ شناور سفر کنند و با شکار ماهی غذای خود را تامین کنند (غذای اصلی خرس های قطبی فک است. این حیوانات از یخ دریا برای تغذیه، جفت گیری و زادوولد استفاده می کنند.) در واقع خرس های قطبی برای ادامه حیات به یخ های موجود در قطب وابسته اند چرا که با شکستن آنها طعمه های خود را از زیر آنها بیرون می کشند.
اما تغییرات جوی و افزایش دمای زمین باعث ذوب شدن کوه های یخ قطب شمال شده است. تحقیقات دانشمندان آمریکایی نشان می دهد خرس های قطبی که در اثر گرم شدن هوا و طولانی شدن فصل های گرم (بدون یخ) از غذای طبیعی خود محروم مانده اند، اکنون به خوردن یکدیگر روی آورده اند. شواهدی که این دانشمندان به آنها استناد می کنند پیدا شدن لاشه ۳ خرس قطبی در شمال آلاسکا و کانادا است که از ژانویه تا آوریل ۲۰۰۴ طعمه دیگر خرس ها شده بودند. لاشه اولین خرس کشته شده در ژانویه ۲۰۰۴ کشف شد. لاشه کشف شده متعلق به خرس ماده ای است که بلافاصله پس از وضع حمل مورد حمله خرس نر دیگری قرار گرفت. خرس نر پس از، از پای در آوردن خرس ماده، لاشه آن را ۲۴۵ کیلومتر دنبال خود کشیده و سپس قسمتی از بدن خرس ماده را خورده بود.
در آوریل ۲۰۰۴ دانشمندان با دنبال کردن رد پای یک خرس قطبی به لاشه یک خرس ماده بزرگسال برخورد کردند که قسمتی از آن خورده شده بود. چند روز بعد نیز محققان کانادایی بقایای خرس دیگری را پیدا کردند که به دست یک خرس مهاجم کشته شده بود.
رفتارشناسان جانوری معتقدند که خرس های قطبی معمولاً برای تنظیم جمعیت، ازدیاد و قلمروطلبی یکدیگر را می کشند اما کشتن هم نوع برای به دست آوردن غذا به ندرت در آنها دیده می شود.
دانشمندانی که مشغول تحقیقات بر روی خرس های قطبی هستند، می گویند: «در مدت ۲۴ سال تحقیق بر روی خرس های قطبی در منطقه جنوب دریای «بیوفورت» واقع در شمال آلاسکا و ۳۴ سال تحقیق در شمال غرب کانادا هیچ موردی از تعقیب، کشتار یا خوردن خرس قطبی به دست یکدیگر را مشاهده نکرده اند.»
این یافته ها تاثیر زیاد فرآیند گرم شدن زمین بر خرس های قطبی را نشان می دهد. یکی از کارشناسان برجسته دانشگاه آلبرتا هشدار داده است خرس های قطبی در نتیجه پدیده گرمایش جهانی طی صد سال آینده برای همیشه پهنه زمین را ترک خواهند کرد. براساس اعلام این دانشمند، خرس های قطبی که برای شکار فک ها به یخ های سطح دریا متکی هستند، به واسطه گرم شدن زمین به شدت در خطر قرار گرفته اند و تداوم روند فعلی به مفهوم انقراض کامل آنان خواهد بود. طرفداران محیط زیست نیز که از وضعیت موجود ناراضی اند، می گویند ذوب یخ های قطبی در اثر گرم شدن هوای کره زمین نسل خرس های قطبی را تا قبل از پایان قرن حاضر منقرض خواهد کرد.
مرکز تنوع زیست شناسی «جوشوا تری» در فوریه ۲۰۰۵ از دولت فدرال درخواست کرد خرس های قطبی را در فهرست گونه های در معرض خطر انقراض قرار دهند.
