هوبره از پرندگان بسیار زیبا و باشكوه كویرهاست .طول بدنش از نوك منقار تا انتهای دم ، حداكثر به ۶۵ سانتی متر می رسد .

نر و ماده شبیه هم هستند ، ولی نرها حدود ۱۰ درصد از ماده ها بزرگتر می باشند .هوبره نر دارای دمی نسبتا بلند و بالهایی باریك در هنگام پرواز است.

دو رشته پرهای زینتی سیاه و سفید در حاشیه گردن دارند كه سیاهی آنها در پشت گردن به خوبی مشخص است.

زمینه پر و بالشان خاكی رنگ است كه در زیر بالها كم و بیش سفید می شود.

سر و تاجی با رگه های سیاه و سفید بر زمینه ای خاكی رنگ دارند و بالای دمشان خاكستری با رگه های عرضی تیره تر است .

نرهای نابالغ شبیه ماده به نظر می رسند ,اما پرهای زینتی حاشیه گردن ماده ها كمتر است.

▪ هوبره ها سه زیر گونه به قرار زیر دارند:

۱) Chlamydotis undulata

Ch. undulata fueraventurae undulata(2

كه از زیرگونه اولی كوچكتر است و در جزایر قناری زندگی می كند.

۳) Ch. undulata macqueenii

كه در آسیا وجود دارد. زیرگونه اخیراز بقیه زیرگونه ها بزرگتر است .هوبره ای كه در ایران دیده می شود ، از این زیرگونه می باشد.

▪ زیستگاه :

هوبره ها درعرضهای جغرافیایی متوسط تا پایین و در نواحی مدیترانه ای ، استپی ، و مناطق نیمه بیابانی و با نواحی باز و بدون پوشش و یا پوششهای بیابانی حداكثر بوته ای ،

دشتهای خشك كه پوشش گیاهی آنها ۲ متر باشد و (اغلب گز و تاغ ) به صورت پراكنده و در نواحی دور افتاده زندگی می كنند .

▪ تغذیه:

هوبره پرنده ای همه چیزخوار است و از بذرها ، دانه ها و شاخه های نازك ،برگ و گل گیاهان استفاده می كند.

البته جانورانی همچون ملخ ، آخوندك ، سوسك ، كرم ، عنكبوت ، مورچه ،مارمولك و حتی مار را نیز می خورد اما اغلب خوراكش را برگ لگجی ، كنار ، خارشتر ، دانه،

میوه گیاهان Allium، گندم و جو و بعضی ازدانه های روغنی كه بیشتر در دسترس است ، تشكیل می دهد .
