مشخصات کلی
با طول بدن 45 سانتیمتر از نظر جثه بینابین خوتکا و سرسبز قرار دارد . گردنش از بقیه اردک ها کوتاهتر و کلفتر است. گیلار پرنده ای اجتماعی بوده در دسته های بزرگ مشاهده می شود . در آبهای شور و شیرین یافت می شود،ولی بیشتر آبهای شور را ترجیح می دهد . پروازش سریع و مستقیم است و در ارتفاع زیاد پرواز می کند.

رفتار
با اردک های دیگری که در سطح آب شنا می کنند عادات و خصوصیات مشابهی داشته ،اغلب اوقات خود را روی آب گذرانده از گیاهان شناور در روی آب تغذیه می نمایند. پرنده ماده دارای صدایی بلند و خشن و پرنده نر صدائی سوت مانند و مشخص دارد. صدای پرنده نر سوت مانندی شبیه وی – یوو Whee- ooo دارد.

نر بالغ
سر بلوطی رنگ ،پیشانی و تارک زرد مایل به نخودی و بدن خاکستری دارد که قسمت خاکستری پشت بدن به وسیله ،یک خط سفید افقی زیر بال از قسمت خاکستری پهلوها جدا می شود . پوش پرهای زیر دم سیاه ،شکم سفید ،منقار کوچک و آبی و در انتها دارای یک لکه سیاه و ساق پای خاکستری از مشخصات این پرنده است. در پرواز آینه بالی سبز و نیم پیدا،سیاهی انتهای بدن و زیر بالها و شکم زرد کمرنگ از عوامل تشخیص پرنده است.

ماده بالغ
شبیه ماده سر سبز است ولی منقار خیلی کوتاهتر ،سرگدتر ،دم نوک تیز و پرو بال قهوه ای مایل به خرمایی آن را از سر سبز متمایل می سازد. ساق پا و منقار خاکستری است.در پرواز شکم سفید ،آینه،بالی سبز و نیم پیدا و گردن کوتاه اختلاف قابل توجه آن را با سایر اردکهای روی آب چر نشان می دهد.

پر ریزان
نرو ماده شبیه یکدیگرند،ولی سفیدی شانه های نر وسیله ،خوبی برای شناسایی است ،هر چند نباید این نشانه سبب اشتباه با پرنده ،نر نابالغ شود. پروبال زمستانی بعد از تولک رفتن در شهریرورماه می شود.

نابالغ ها
نابالغ ها ی نر و ماده شبیه یکدیگرند،ولی در پرنده ،نر نابالغ جلوی بالها خاکستری مایل به قهوه ای است که تا بعد از نخستین جوجه آوری این رنگ به سفیدی تبدیل نمی شود. این نشانه یک سالگی در پرنده ،ماده بیشتر از نر مشخص است . گردن کوتاه و فرم و شکل خاص بدن علایم خوبی برای شناسایی پرنده است.

جوجه ها
خودکفا بوده ،شبیه جوجه های سرسبز و کمی قهوه ای ترند .خط چشمی مشخصی دارند . صورت آنها نیز قرمز از جوجه سرسبز است . قسمتهای تحتانی بدن صورتی آمیخته با قهوه ای رنگ و قسمتهای فوقانی بدن قهوه ای است. جوجه ها پس از 6 هفته قادر به پرواز می شوند،در این مدت مادر از آنها نگهداری و مراقبت می کند.

فصل جوجه آوری
در نیمکره جنوبی اواخر اردیبهشت و در نیمکره ،شمالی اوایل تیر جوجه آوری شروع می شود.

شرایط زیستگاهی مناطق جوجه آوری
در شرایط زیستگاهی متفاوت و در جزایر واقع در آبهای شیرین با نزدیک آب و رودخانه آشیانه می سازد. آشیانه بین علفها یا گیاهان پنهان است.

شکل و مواد ساختمان آشیانه
آشیانه کاسه ای شکل است و از مواد گیاهی ساخته می شود. پوشش داخلی آشیانه را علف با پر نرم تشکیل می دهد. رنگ پوشش داخلی آشیانه قهوه ای و قسمت مرکزی آن کمرنگ است.
تعداد، رنگ و اندازه تخمها
تعداد تخمها معمولاً 7 تا 8 به رنگ کرم به اندازه 3/ 38. 9/53 میلیمتر است.

دوران تفریخ
فقط ماده مدت 22 تا 25 روز روی تخمها می خوابد.

پراکندگی
در شمال،غرب ،جنوب،جنوب غربی،تالابهای مناطق مرکزی،شمال شرقی،دریاچه هامون و تالابهای سیستان و بلوچستان دیده می شود.در فصل پاییز در دسته های بزرگ مهاجرت می کند،عده ای از منطقه عبور نموده و تعدادی از آنها اگر منطقه را مناسب و خالی از خطر تشخیص دهند ،زمستان را نیز در آنجا سپری می کنند. در ایران زمستان فراوان اند و تا مناطق جنوب شرقی نیز دیده می شوند.

چگونگی حفاظت
در حال حاضر جمعیت این پرنده نگران کننده نیست لازم است مناطق جوجه آوری پرنده حفاظت شود ،از شکار بی رویه آن ممانعت به عمل آید و همچنان حمایت قانونی از پرنده ادامه یابد.
