منشا نژادهای سگ

همان طوری که در طبیعت، تمامی موجودات زنده خودشان را با شرایط محیطی و تغییرات آب و هوایی وفق می دهند هیچ شکی وجود ندارد که سگ ها نیز که در مراحل اولیه در نقاط مختلف جهان به وجود آمدند خودشان را با این شرایط سازگار کرده باشند . سگ های تازی اولیه برای نواحی بیابانی و جلگه ای و سگ های مستیف برای نواحی کوهستانی و جنگلی سازش یافتند. موتاسیون (جهش) موجب افزایش تعداد گونه ها شد و بتدریج این گونه ها آگاهانه توسط انسان به کار گرفته و پرورش داده شد. جمجمه ها و استخوان های یافت شده از عصر حجر نشان می دهد که حد اقل چهار نوع سگ در اروپا وجود داشته است که از نظر جثه و شکل جمجمه با هم تفاوت داشتند.دور از واقعیت خواهد بود اگر تصور کنیم که انسان در ایجاد این چهار گونه دخالتی داشته است. منشا این چهار گونه ممکن است متفاوت باشد. به عنوان مثال در بعضی موارد از گرگ و در مواردی دیگر از شغال مشتق شده اند. همچنین ممکن است از حیوان دیگری که به طور مستقل از سایر حیوانات تکامل یافته است به وجود آمده باشند
