محققان آمریکایی از تولید واکسنی خبر داده اند که میمون ها را در برابر ابتلا به بیماری ایدز مصون می کند.به گفته آنها واکسن جدید در ایجاد مصونیت در ۱۳ میمون از ۲۴ میمون مورد آزمایش موفقیت آمیز بوده است.آنها می گویند، در دوازده مورد مصونیت ایجاد شده بیشتر از یک سال دوام داشته است .

این محققان در گزارشی که در نشریه نیچر منتشر کرده اند، گفته اند دستاوردهای این تحقیق نقش مهمی در تولید واکسن ایدز برای انسان ها خواهد داشت
محققان موسسه واکسن سازی و درمان ژنتیک اورگان در مطالعات خود واکسنی را که حاوی ویروس CMV بود را به ۲۴ میمون ماکاک تزریق کردند.ویروس تزریق شده از نظر ساختار وراثتی دچار تغییراتی شده بود تا پس از تزریق، آنتی ژن مورد نیاز برای هجوم به ویروس نقص ایمنی میمونی (SIV) را تولید کند.ویروس معادل ویروس نقص ایمنی انسانی (HIV) است که عامل به وجود آورنده بیماری ایدز است

آزمایش ها نشان داد که ۱۳ میمون از گروه دریافت کننده واکسن در برابر ویروس مصون شدند.
این مصونیت در دوازده میمون برای بیشتر از یک سال برقرار بود.
به گفته محققان، تزریق این واکسن با تحریک سیستم ایمنی میمون دریافت کننده دارو، باعث تولید نوع خاصی از لنفوسیت های Tمی شود.لنفوسیت هاT از سلول های سیستم ایمنی بدن هستند.
این نوع خاص از لنفوسیت T تا مدت ها پس از سرکوب عفونت در بدن فعال خواهد بود و نسبت به عفونت های بعدی مقاومت خواهند کرد.

پروفسور لوئیس جی پیکر، سرپرست محققان این نوع از لنفوسیت های T را به سربازانی تشبیه کرده است که در آماده باش به سر می برند.
آقای پیکر گفت: سربازانی دارید که همراه با اسلحه های خود در پایگاه هستند و سپس شاهد حضور آنها در جبهه خواهید بود.
نتیجه تحقیقات نشان داده است که واکسن مورد آزمایش آثار ابتلا به ایدز را در میمون ها از بین برده است. هیچ کدام از آزمایش های انجام شده بر روی انسان چنین نتیجه ای را به همراه نداشته است.کارشناسان با استقبال از نتیجه این آزمایش درباره ضرورت احتیاط در به کارگیری این واکسن در انسان ها هشدار داده اند
پرفسور سر اندرو مک مایکل از دانشگاه آکسفورد با اشاره به ویروس SIV به عنوان منشا ایجاد ویروس HIV مدل به کار گرفته شده در این تحقیق را درست ارزیابی کرد ولی هشدار داد که استفاده از این واکسن می تواند باعث بروز بیماری در انسان ها شود.تولید واکسن اچ آی وی به چالش بزرگی برای محققان تبدیل شده است ولی تاکنون موفقیت هایی در این رابطه به وجود آمده است.
محققان تایلندی در سال ۲۰۰۹ گزارشی را در نشریه لنست منتشر کردند که خبر از تولید واکسنی آزمایشی می داد که احتمال آلودگی به HIV را یک سوم کاهش می داد.
