مشخصات عمومي :
اين پرنده حدود 17 سانتيمتر طول داشته و جثه اي بزرگ و منقاري سخت و مخروطي به رنگ خاکستري تيره دارد و در دمش سفيدي ديده نمي شود .
پرنده اي اجتماعي بوده و پروازي موجي شکل دارد . از نواحي مسکوني دوري مي کند و در مزارع و يا حاشيه مزارع و به خصوص مزارع کلزا در فصول بهار و تابستان ديده مي شود .
لانه اين پرنده در سطح زمين و لابلاي بوته ها ساخته مي شود .

مشخصات پرنده نر :
پرنده نر از نظر ظاهري کاملاً متفاوت از پرنده ماده مي باشد . سر و گونه در پرنده نر سياه رنگ بوده و چانه ، سينه و شکم زرد رنگ مي باشد .
روتنه به رنگ بلوطي يا قهوه اي متمايل به قرمز مي باشد . دم نيز حنايي رنگ است . بال ها ترکيبي از رنگ قهوه اي با رگه هاي سفيد و نيز لکه سياهي در سرشانه است

مشخصات پرنده ماده و جوان :
پرنده ماده و جوان در مجموع کمرنگ تر و بدون سياهي در سر هستند . در پرنده جوان سينه زرد کمرنگ است که آثاري از رنگ قرمز حنايي در آن ديده مي شود .

پراکنش :
در ايران تابستان ها فراوان بوده و به وفور توليد مثل مي کند و به خصوص در نواحي شمال غرب ، غرب و بخش هايي از مرکز کشور ديده مي شود


تغذيه :
اين پرنده دانه خوار مي باشد و از انواع دانه ها تغذيه مي کند .

آواز :
صداي اين پرنده متنوع و تکرار نوت هاي بلند و خشک شبيه ( ته سي -تيا - تيا – تيا-ترلو-ترلو-ترلو ) شنيده مي شود .
اين پرنده در قفس نيز نگهداري شده و آواز مي خواند ولي آواز خواني آن در قفس کمتر از هنگامي که در طبيعت است مي باشد .
اين پرنده در فصل تابستان غالباً روي سيم هاي برق و يا نوک شاخه درختان و يا نوک بوته ها نشسته و در حالي که سر خود را بالا مي گيرد آواز مي خواند.
