چرا دارکوب ها سردرد نمی گیرند؟

دارکوب های کاکل دار که بزرگترین دارکوب ها در آمریکای شمالی به شمار می روند سر خود را 20 مرتبه در ثانیه با سرعت 24 کیلومتر در ساعت به تنه درختان می کوبند اما مغز و چشم و سرشان آسیب نمی بیند!
به گزارش پایگاه اینترنتی لایو ساینس یک محقق دریافته است که ماهیچه های ضخیم، استخوان های اسفنجی شکل و پلک سوم باعث می شود که مغز و چشم این پرندگان صحیح و سالم بماند.
" ایوان اسکواب " یک چشم پزشک در دانشگاه دیویس کالیفرنیا گفت: اگر ضربه شدیدی به سر انسان وارد شود رگ های خونی پشت چشم پاره می شوند و اعصاب چشم نیز صدمه می بینند. وی گفت: مشاهده افرادی که در جریان سوانح رانندگی دچار جراحات شدید می شوند برای من این سوال را پیش آورد که
دارکوب ها چرا آسیب نمی بینند؟
وی پاییز 2009 به دلیل تحقیقش در زمینه علت مصون ماندن دارکوب ها از سردرد که در مجله انگلیسی " چشم پزشکی " چاپ شد، برنده جایزه " نوبل ال جی " شد. این جایزه به کسی داده می شود که هیات داوران تحقیق علمی او را به عنوان برترین تحقیق " جالب اما بی ثمر و بی فایده " انتخاب کنند.
تحقیق این چشم پزشک نشان می دهد علاوه بر ضربه های مستقیم پیکانی شکل که از صدمه دیدن سر این پرنده جلوگیری می کند، بدن آنها به گونه ای طراحی شده است که تاثیر این ضربه ها را جذب می کند. یک هزارم ثانیه قبل از ضربه، نوک پرنده حرکت می کند، ماهیچه های متراکم گردن منقبض می شود و پرنده، پلک داخلی ضخیم خود را می بندد.
بخشی از این نیرو به ناحیه پایین ماهیچه های گردن منتقل می شود و به این ترتیب از وارد آمدن ضربه کامل به جمجمه جلوگیری می شود.
وجود یک استخوان قابل انعطاف در جمجمه نیز مانند یک کوسن عمل می کند. اسکواب گفت: پلک چشم این حیوان مانند کمربند ایمنی صندلی عمل می کند و حقیقتا" از بیرون زدن چشم از سر جلوگیری می کند و در غیر این صورت شبکیه چشم پاره می شد!
هرچند دانشمندان نمی توانند مطمئن باشند که دارکوب ها سردرد نمی گیرند اما به گفته اسکواب حداقل می توان مطمئن بود که آنها در برابر سردرد بسیار مقام هستند!
