یک دانشمند* آمریکایی ادعا کرده است که باید با دلفین*ها به عنوان «آدم*های غیر انسان» رفتار شود و حقوق خاصی فراتر از سایر حیوانات برای آنها در نظر گرفته شود، چون این حیوانات آبزی بسیار باهوش هستند.

این محقق می*گوید: به لحاظ اخلاقی پذیرفته شده نیست که این جانوران هوشمند در اسارت باشند یا برای غذا کشته شوند.

چارلز آوری، دانشمند* آمریکایی و نویسنده کتاب مدرسه*ای برای دلفین*ها در این زمینه تصریح کرد: از مدت*ها پیش دلفین*ها جزو باهوش ترین حیوانات شناخته شده*اند، به طوری که ضریب هوشی آنها در سطح یک کودک سه ساله انسان است، اما برخی از محققان آنها را حتی پایین*تر از شامپانزه*ها قرار می*دهند. با این حال اکنون مجموعه*ای از مطالعات رفتاری نشان داده است که دلفین*ها به ویژه ای گونه*هایی مثل «بینی بطری*ای » ها هم از شامپانزه*ها و هم از کودک سه ساله انسان باهوش تر هستند.
تحقیقات نشان می*دهد، دلفین شخصیت*های مجزا و احساس قوی نسبت به خودشان دارند و می*توانند درباره آینده فکر کنند.
آنها همچنین حیوانات دارای فرهنگ هستند، یعنی انواع رفتارهای جدید را به سرعت از یکدیگر یاد می*گیرند.
