رابطه سکته ی مغزی با آلودگی هوا

افزایش ذرات آلوده کننده ی هوا با افزایش شمار سکته های مغزی ناشی از وجود لخته خون مسدود کننده در رگ های مغز (سکته مغزی ایسکمیک) ارتباط دارد اما در سکته های مغزی ناشی از پارگی شریان های مغز نقشی ندارد.[JUSTIFY]
بررسی های پیشین نشان داده بود که بین آلودگی هوا و خطر کلی حملات قلبی و سایر عوارض قلبی-عروقی رابطه وجود دارد، اما تاثیر آلودگی هوا بویژه بر روی سکته ی مغزی مورد بررسی قرار نگرفته بود.
بررسی پژوهشگران آمریکایی بر روی گروه زیادی از بیماران نشان داده که افزایش میزان ذرات معلق هوا از کمترین حد تا بالاترین حد در یک روز، میزان بستری شدن به خاطر سکته مغزی ایسکمیک را در همان روز ۳۰ درصد می افزاید.
بررسی های بعدی نشان داد که میان سطح مونوکسیدکربن، دی اکسید نیتروژن و دی اکسید گوگود در هوا و میزان سکته های مغزی ایسکمیک همین رابطه برقرار است.
گرچه میزان افزایش خطر سکته مغزی ایسکمیک به این دلیل به ازای هر فرد کم است، تعداد سکته های مغزی اضافه شده ممکن است خیلی بالا باشد، زیرا آلودگی هوا همه ی انساناها را تحت تاثیر قرار می دهد.[/JUSTIFY]
