نام این نژاد از سومالی ( کشوری در آفریقا) مشتق شده ولی گفته می شود منشأ آن ارتباطی به این کشور ندارد.

گربه های نژاد سومالی همانند نژاد حبشی (Abyssinian) فعال ، صمیمی و فوق العاده باهوش هستند. آنها به محبت و توجه صاحب خود نیاز داشته و در صورتی که از طرف آنها مورد بی مهری و بی توجهی قرار گیرند ، افسرده خواهند شد.




این گربه ها عضلات قوی و جثه متوسطی دارند. موهای حیوان نرم بوده و در عین حال از استحکام بالایی برخوردار است. گربه های سومالی اغلب به رنگهای قرمز و سفید ، حنایی ، شکلاتی ، آبی ، آهویی و نقره ای دیده می شوند.



این گربه ترکیبی است از زیبایی و شخصیت . گربه ای بسیار جذاب است که علی رقم موکوتاه بودن دمی بسیار موبلند دارد و نقش و نگارهای پوشش این گربه خیره کننده اند .
