این بیماری یکی از بیماریهای کشنده و قابل انتقال به انسان بوده که توسط کنه هیالوما قابل انتقال می باشد.

این بیماری در گوسفند ، گاو و شتر مرغ ویرمی بسیار کوتاه و بدون علائم بالینی ایجاد می کند.

انسان از طریق گزش کنه و یا تماس مستقیم با خون حیوانی که دارای ویرمی است آلوده می گردد. تاکنون گزارش از ابتلای انسان به این بیماری در اثر مصرف گوشت آلوده گزارش نشده است.

در آفریقای جنوبی شتر مرغ ها از نظر سرولوژی مثبت می باشند. در سال ۱۹۹۶ کارگران یک کشتارگاه شترمرغ در اثر تماس با خون شتر مرغ آلوده ، آلوده شند.

طبق قوانین شتر مرغ های آماده کشتار ، ۱۴ روز قبل از اعزام به کشتارگاه باید توسط کنه کش تیمار گشته و سپس عازم کشتارگاه گردند.
