Camel (Camelus dromedarius) is an important multipurpose popular local animal in semiarid
areas of Iran, and more than 200,000 dromedary camels are living in the arid and semiarid
deserts of Iran. But now camel raisers try to submit the animals basically for the purpose of
meat consumption. In some areas of Iran, people are used to consume camel meat which has
good quality and economically fair in comparison to beef and sheep (Mowlavi et al. 1997;
Rahbari and Bazargani 1995). Although camels are important sources of milk and meat for food
purposes, wool and hides for clothing and other textile articles, and are widely used in
transportation and other working activities, they have not received adequate attention so far as
their parasitic diseases are concerned, particularly those caused by helminths. However, the
helminths are the major cause of impaired milk and meat production, decline in fertility of
males and decrease in the calving rate of the females (Baraka et al. 2000). Camel is a very hardy
animal and well adapted anatomically as well as physiologically to harsh climatic conditions of
desert Nevertheless, it suffers from various endo and ecto-parasitic diseases which are major
constraints in improvement of camel health. These diseases cause substantial economic losses
in terms of decrease in working capacity, growth and productivity. (Parsani et al 2008).
Despite the general reputation for hardiness and resilience, camels are, however, vulnerable to
many infections (Wernery et al. 2004) and parasitic agents (Bukachi et al. 2003; Mohammed et
al. 2007). D. evansi occurs in the spermatic artery, pulmonary arteries, as well as mesenteric
lymph nodes and lymph vessels, right heart atrium, and ventricle and hepatic arteries (Soulsby
1982; Elamin et al. 1993; Moghaddar et al. 1992; Kaufmann 1996). A parasitic orchitis may
occur, or aneurysms and hematomas may be present in the spermatic vessels (Soulsby 1982;
Hemeida et al. 1985; Moghaddar et al. 1992). Hemoparasitic diseases such as dipetalonemiasis
have an adverse impact on health, productivity, and working capacity of camel (Ahmad et al.
2004). Infection of camel with this parasite has been reported from Egypt, Sudan, the Far East
and eastern parts of the farmer USSR, North and East Africa, and in Pakistan and India (Soulsby
1982; Kaufman 1996; Butt 1995; Pathak et al. 1998; Mehran 2004). There are also few reports
showing infection of camels in different parts of Iran with this parasite (Moghaddar et al. 1992;
Rahbari and Bazargani 1995; Zarif-Fard and Hashemi-Fesharaki 2000; Oryan et al. 2008).
